This roster of Co. E, 18th Virginia Infantry has been divided into three groups:

1) Original volunteers who enlisted on 23 Apr 1861 at Walton’s Mill in Cumberland County, Virginia or shortly thereafter at their camp in Richmond ;

2) Those joining after the Battle of 1st Manassas (21 Jul 1861) and before the Battle of Williamsburg (5 May 1862);

3) Later members who enlisted, were conscripted or transferred into the unit after May 1862.  This group is further divided into two subgroups: members who were from the local area of the original volunteers and those who were from other parts of Virginia .

Original volunteers, Apr-Jun 1861:

The soldiers listed below were original volunteer members of the “Black Eagle Rifles” who enlisted at Walton’s Mill in Cumberland County, Virginia on 23 Apr 1861, under Capt. Carter Henry Harrison, and were officially mustered-in on 24 Apr 1861 in Richmond, Virginia by Genl. Baldwin.  The “Black Eagle Rifle” company was formed in the northern part of Cumberland County in the fall of 1859 by Capt. Harrison and were described as drilling on the lawn of “Elkora,” the home of Capt. Harrison, in Jan 1861.  A few others from their community enlisted within the following weeks, while they were still encamped at the Fair Grounds in Richmond , and are included in this list as original volunteers.

These original volunteers were all residents of the immediate area of northern Cumberland , northeastern Buckingham, southern Fluvanna, and southwestern Powhatan counties or had close ties to the area; many were related by blood or marriage; most were lifelong friends and neighbors.  They came from all walks of life, from uneducated and poor to the most educated, wealthiest members of the upper echelons of Virginia society.

A few of the original members of the “Black Eagle Rifles” were not officially mustered-in to the Confederate forces once they reached Richmond , due to age or infirmity.  Their names are included here because they are mentioned in contemporary accounts or are found on post-war rostser lists as having been enlisted on 23 Apr 1861 and present at the campground in Richmond .

The age, marital status and occupation given here are as of the date of enlistment.

Some middle names were those commonly used by the soldier; nicknames are in quotation marks.

The average age of the original 66 volunteers was around 27 years old.  Forty-two were single at the time of enlistment, 23 were married with families, and 1 was widowed with small children.  The occupations of the volunteers are as follows: 41 farmers (including everything from plantation owner to sharecropper,) 5 carpenters, 4 wheelwrights, 3 physicians, 2 clerks, 2 bricklayers, 2 millwrights, 1 painter, 1 shoemaker, 1 overseer, 1 miller, 1 merchant, 1 teacher and 1 lawyer.
